There are a few things to consider when picking the right location for your family photo session. I want to make this process as stress free as possible for you so I have put together a few tips to help you decide!
* Consider what you want your photographs to look like!
Do you love bright colours or muted tones? Are you a city slicker or do you prefer the quiet country side? Your location of choice will have a massive impact on how the photographs will turn out. Take into account your families personality and your personal style. Will a beautiful green natural backdrop suit your vibe? A gorgeous sandy beach? Those colourful urban streets?
* Consider where you would like to display your family photographs
Have a look around your home and think about where you would like to display your family art. Consider your colour scheme and home decor, will the location suit the same style?
* What are you planning to wear on your family session?
Your choice of clothing and the location can go hand in hand. Do you love the long dress and windswept look? Cosy jumpers and denim? I always always tell my families to be themselves and to wear what makes them feel best, but it can really make for stunning photographs when your choice of clothing matches your location! Think of wearing a long dress with your hair blowing in the wind walking along a sandy beach at sunset... or wearing a wooly hat, a cosy coat, sipping hot chocolate on an urban street, or wearing welly boots with an umbrella in the rain!
* Make the location accessible and stress free
The best locations have parking near by and are accessible for all. Public toilets are so so important with young children !
* Pick somewhere that means something to you!
Think about somewhere that holds memories for you. Where do you like to spend time as a family?
* Consider having your session in your own home or back garden!
Having photographs taken from your own home will mean so so much in the future. More so than any other location. Children grow up, people move homes, situations change. To have memories of your life right now in the place you call home will be invaluable in the future.
Here is a family photoshoot I had recently in Mullagh, Cavan. We chose the main street of the town and the gorgeous local park as the location for the photoshoot. By doing so, we could combine photographs with lots of greenery and nature, with photographs of the town. The gallery had such variety. There was a combination of artful, dreamy family portraits and images of the children's home town- for them to cherish as they grow up.
Here are some of my favourites. What a beautiful family photo session it was!

It shows that with a little thought and planning, the locations that mean the most can work so well for family photos - and mean so much more. Such a helpful blog post!
I love this. So much food for thought! I am definitely more of a countryside girl.
