Wedding Photographer Dublin & Ireland | Kilkenny Wedding Venue Guide
Right, I have to talk about the Set Theatre. Because if you're planning a wedding and you haven't looked into this place yet, you are genuinely missing out, and I say that as someone who has photographed weddings all over Ireland. There are venues, and then there's the Set Theatre at Langtons Hotel in Kilkenny. It is something else entirely.
I'm Deirdre Rusk, a Dublin wedding photographer, and when couples ask me about smaller, more intimate, and genuinely show-stopping venues, this one always comes up. So I figured it was time to give it the proper write-up it deserves!
What even is the Set Theatre?
The Set Theatre is part of Langtons Hotel on John Street in Kilkenny city centre, a four-star, family-owned hotel that's been at the heart of Kilkenny life since 1938. The hotel itself is a brilliant patchwork of spaces: bars, restaurants, a bakery, a tea room, boutique bedrooms. It's the kind of place that has real soul to it, and that soul shows up in every corner.
The Set Theatre was added in 2009 and designed by the world-renowned David Collins Studio in London, the same studio behind some of the most iconic interiors in Europe. And honestly? You can tell. The interior is gorgeous, all velvet and drama and a proper red carpet moment, and it photographs beautifully. It's theatrical in the best possible way. As a wedding photographer in Ireland, I genuinely get excited every time I'm headed to a wedding here.
The interiors were also designed with specialist acoustic specifications, which means sound in there is brilliant. That matters more than people realise when it comes to ceremonies, speeches, and live music.
Who is it for?
If you're after a big traditional Irish wedding with 250 guests and a band until 2am, the Set Theatre isn't your venue. Langtons' own ballroom handles larger weddings beautifully in a completely different style. But if you want something intimate, a little bit dramatic, and genuinely unforgettable? This is it.
The Set Theatre works for anywhere from 20 guests up to a maximum of 108, and it suits a civil ceremony, a full wedding reception, or an evening-only celebration. It's flexible in a way that a lot of venues aren't, and that flexibility is really valuable when you're planning something a bit outside the norm.
It's particularly brilliant for couples who want a venue they've chosen because they actually love it, not just because it ticked a box. Couples who care about design and atmosphere and having a day that feels genuinely like them. As a wedding photographer working with couples all over Dublin and Ireland, I've noticed that the Set Theatre attracts a certain kind of wedding energy, and honestly, it's a brilliant energy to photograph.
The spaces you'll be working with
Beyond the main theatre space, there are some genuinely lovely extras worth knowing about.
The private courtyard is a hidden gem. It's a chic, lush outdoor space where your guests can take a breath away from the main event, surrounded by greenery and good vibes. From a photography point of view it's one of those beautiful in-between spaces, perfect for relaxed portraits and candid moments during the drinks reception.
Then there's Bridie's Bar and General Store, which absolutely deserves a mention. It's an old world bar with beautiful tiled floors, wood panelled walls, pewter and marble counters, and an exotic walled garden with seating in Victorian-styled bus shelters. It's ideal for arrival drinks or a day-after gathering, and it is one of the most characterful spaces I've come across anywhere in Ireland. The photos in there are unreal.
Practical information for guests
For anyone travelling to a Set Theatre wedding, here's what you need to know.
Langtons Hotel is at 67 John Street in Kilkenny city centre, about a five-minute walk from the train station and bus stops. If you're driving, there's private and secure parking on site, which is a proper luxury for a city centre location.
There are 34 boutique bedrooms and suites in the hotel, so keeping your wedding party and closest guests under one roof is very doable. The bridal suites are brilliant for getting-ready photos too, great light and loads of space.
For guests coming from Dublin, the train to Kilkenny MacDonagh station is about 80 minutes from Heuston and very straightforward, and the hotel is basically a stroll from the platform. Kilkenny is very walkable once you're there, so nobody needs to be stressing about taxis or transport.
For guests who want to explore a bit, you're right in the middle of everything. The River Nore walks, Kilkenny Castle, Rothe House, St Canice's Cathedral, the Medieval Mile Museum, and all the shops and restaurants in the city are all on your doorstep. Kilkenny is a brilliant city to spend a weekend in, so encourage your guests to arrive the night before and make a proper trip of it!
The awards situation
Just so you know you're in good company: Langtons was named Best Civil Ceremony Venue in Ireland 2025 and has been voted Top Rated City Wedding Venue in Ireland for 2023 and 2024 by Wedding Dates. It's also featured in One Fab Day's Top 100 Wedding Venues for over a decade. These things aren't handed out for nothing. The team there is genuinely exceptional and the food gets rave reviews every single time.
A word about the light — and why it matters for your photos
This is something I always want couples to know before they book the Set Theatre, not to put them off, but to make sure they're booking it for exactly the right reasons.
The Set Theatre is dark. Intentionally, beautifully, dramatically dark. This is a designed space, and that design leans fully into atmosphere over brightness. The lighting is warm and moody, the velvet absorbs light, and there are no big windows flooding the room with natural daylight. This is not a bright, airy, white-walls-and-greenery kind of venue. It is the opposite of that, and that is exactly what makes it special.
What that means for your wedding photos is that they will look different to what you might see from a lot of other Irish venues. They'll be richer, moodier, and more cinematic. Think deep tones, warm highlights, and images that look like they belong in a film rather than a lifestyle magazine.
As a wedding photographer in Dublin and across Ireland, I genuinely love shooting in low light when a space is designed for it, because the results are unlike anything else. The Set Theatre is built for atmosphere, and that atmosphere comes through in every single image.
That said, it is worth having an honest conversation with your wedding photographer in advance. Low light photography requires the right equipment and experience, and not every photographer will be comfortable or familiar with it. Make sure whoever you book has shot in similar conditions and knows how to work with available light rather than fighting it. When it's done right, the photos from a Set Theatre wedding are some of the most striking and unique wedding images you'll see anywhere in Ireland.
If the idea of bright, golden-hour, outdoor portraits is what you're dreaming of, you'll get some of that too, because Kilkenny Castle and the city streets are right on your doorstep. But inside the Set Theatre itself, lean into the drama. It suits the venue, and it'll suit your photos.
What it's like to photograph there
As a wedding photographer in Dublin and across Ireland, I have to say: this place is an absolute dream to work in.
The drama of the theatre space, the intimacy of the courtyard, the character of Bridie's Bar, and the medieval streets of Kilkenny just outside. If you venture five minutes down the road you've got Kilkenny Castle as a backdrop. The variety of locations you can use in a single wedding day is brilliant.
The low light inside the Set Theatre creates images with a richness and depth you just don't get in a standard hotel function room. Ceremonies in there feel genuinely cinematic, and every time I come away with photos I'm properly proud of. It suits my style of natural, documentary wedding photography brilliantly, and I think it suits couples who want their wedding to look and feel like no one else's.
