VILLAGE BARN TYRRELLSPASS WEDDING -DEIRDRE RUSK PHOTOGRAPHY
There are weddings you photograph and then there are weddings that make you want to ring the couple the next day just to say thanks for having me. L & F's wedding at The Village Barn in Tyrrellspass was very much the second kind.
The sun showed up like it had been personally invited. And given the energy of these two, I genuinely think it had.
The day
L & F are the kind of couple who make everyone around them feel good. No stress, no drama, no watching the clock, just two people who were absolutely mad about each other, surrounded by the people they love most, having the time of their lives from morning to night.
We did the family photos and wedding party shots, the ones parents frame and put on the mantelpiece, and then we completely lost the plot entirely. The silliest poses we could dream up, absolute hysterics, tears of laughter. Some of the most genuinely joyful photographs I have ever taken came from those five minutes of pure chaos. That's always where the magic is. Not the perfectly composed moment but the one right after it when everyone falls apart laughing.
The bride's embroidered flower dress needs its own mention. Delicate, colourful, and completely and utterly her. Watching her move through the venue in it I kept thinking, this is what wedding dresses are supposed to look like.
It was one of those days I was still smiling about on the drive home. Still smiling about now, honestly.
The Village Barn, Tyrrellspass — a venue worth knowing about
This was my first time photographing at The Village Barn and it will absolutely not be my last.
Tyrrellspass is a small village in Co. Westmeath, not the most obvious wedding destination, and that's exactly what makes it special. The Village Barn sits in the kind of Irish countryside that makes you remember why you live here. Rolling green fields, big open skies, and a venue with so much personality it practically introduces itself when you walk through the door.
It's rustic without being rough around the edges. Exposed beams, twinkling lights, cosy corners and vintage touches that feel considered rather than thrown together. The main barn is warm and genuinely beautiful for dining and dancing, and the layout just works for a wedding day in the way that some venues take years to figure out.
There's outdoor ceremony space too, and the gardens are gorgeous for photos. The kind of setting where you don't need to go looking for a backdrop because you're already standing in one.
What struck me most was the atmosphere. The staff are friendly, relaxed and quietly brilliant at what they do — the kind of team that makes a wedding day run smoothly without you ever noticing them doing it. It doesn't feel like a conveyor belt. It feels like a place that genuinely cares how your day goes.
What it's like to shoot there
I'm not a fly on the wall photographer. I'm there with you for the whole day, in the middle of it all, having the craic with your guests, and always ready when something real happens. The Village Barn suits that approach perfectly.
The barn interior shifts beautifully throughout the day, from soft morning light to warm golden tones as the evening comes in. Outside you've got the gardens, the open countryside, and enough interesting corners to keep me happily occupied from the first look to the last dance. We'll do your couple portraits and family photos, relaxed and fun and over before you know it, and then it's straight back to the party where we both belong.
For couples who want their wedding album to feel alive — full of movement, laughter and real moments rather than posed setpieces — this venue is absolutely made for that.
Thinking about The Village Barn for your wedding?
If you want a venue with genuine soul, a relaxed feel, and the kind of natural beauty that makes great photography feel effortless — go and view The Village Barn. Seriously. You won't regret it.
And if you're looking for a wedding photographer who'll be fully part of your day, not hovering at the edges but right in the middle of it all with you — I'd love to hear about your plans.

If L & F's day looks like the kind of wedding you're dreaming of — joyful, relaxed, completely yourselves from start to finish — then we're probably a good fit.
I photograph a small number of weddings each year, which means the couples I work with get all of me, all day. No rushing, no watching the clock, no feeling like you're just another date in the diary. Just honest, joyful photography that tells the real story of your day.
If that sounds like what you're looking for, I'd love to have a chat.
