STEPHEN'S GREEN CLUB WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER DUBLIN | DEIRDRE RUSK PHOTOGRAPHY
A Christmas wedding in the heart of Dublin with crisp winter light, elegant rooms and a room absolutely full of joy
Some venues just get it right. The Stephen's Green Club is one of those places. And at Christmas, with the city quiet and the light doing something genuinely special, it becomes something else entirely.
Saturday's wedding there was one of those days that reminds you exactly why Dublin city weddings are so hard to beat.
The day
From the minute I arrived, it just felt right. Calm streets, crisp winter light and a room full of people absolutely bursting with joy. The decorations were spot on — elegant trees, soft lighting, greenery done with real taste. Nothing over the top, everything working with the space rather than fighting it. Warm, welcoming and full of atmosphere in the way that only a venue with genuine history can pull off.
The ceremony was full of heart. There were big laughs, happy tears and that deep relaxed joy you only get when everyone is exactly where they're meant to be. The flowers by Ginkgo Florist were stunning, the ceremony music by Jenny Dowdall was beautiful, celebrant Billy Hutchinson had the whole room in the palm of his hand, and The Hitman Trio had the dancefloor absolutely flying by the end of the night.
It was a Christmas wedding full of everything Christmas weddings should be full of.
The Stephen's Green Club — proper old Dublin bones
If you're looking for a Dublin city wedding venue with genuine character, the kind that doesn't need to be dressed up because it's already stunning, the Stephen's Green Club is worth a very serious look.
The building dates back to the 1720s and sits at number 9 St Stephen's Green, right in the heart of the city between Grafton Street and Kildare Street. It has been hosting events for almost two centuries and it shows in the best possible way. Ornate plasterwork, original Georgian sash windows, dramatic fireplaces, beautiful chandeliers and antique furniture throughout. This is a building that has real Dublin bones and you feel it the moment you step through the door.
Ceremonies are held in the Card Room, a beautiful intimate space with a domed ceiling dating back to 1840 and exquisite plasterwork by the Lafranchini Brothers from the 1750s. There is real history in that room. Up to 80 guests can be seated here and the space works brilliantly for civil ceremonies, humanist ceremonies and everything in between.
The Hibernian Room on the first floor is where the wedding meal takes place, and it is genuinely one of the loveliest dining rooms in Dublin. Large original Georgian windows flood the room with light and look directly out over the park. At Christmas, with the trees bare and the fairy lights glowing, it is something else. The room seats up to 96 guests for dinner and feels intimate without feeling small.
There is also a hidden gem of a private courtyard, tucked away from the city streets, perfect for drinks receptions. And the Card Room transforms later for the evening reception, which means the band can set up while guests are still eating and the first dance is always on time.
For couples looking for something intimate — the club caters for wedding parties from 30 to 80 people — this is a venue that provides the warmth of a family gathering with the elegance of a proper occasion.
The location is genuinely unbeatable
Step outside and you are standing beside St Stephen's Green. Even in winter the park is stunning. Bare trees, winding paths, iron gates and quiet corners where the city fades away completely. It is one of the best locations for couple portraits in Dublin at any time of year and in winter, with that particular low golden light, it is absolutely magical.
If the weather turns, the Georgian streets surrounding the club are full of character and perfect for photos. Inside, the staircase, the Card Room and the Hibernian Room all give you beautiful light and texture to work with. As a photographer at the Stephen's Green Club you are genuinely spoiled for choice at every hour of the day.
Parking is very manageable for a city centre venue. The Stephen's Green Club offers a 50% discount on parking at St Stephen's Green Shopping Centre car park directly across the road, and Q Park on Dawson Street is also a popular option for guests. For a city centre venue it really could not be handier.
What it's like to shoot there
I'm not a fly on the wall photographer. I'm there with you for the whole day, in the middle of it all, having the craic with your guests and always ready when something real is about to happen. The Stephen's Green Club suits that approach perfectly. The rooms flow beautifully for weddings, the staff run everything quietly and brilliantly in the background, and couples can just enjoy their day without worrying about a single thing.
We'll do your couple portraits across the road in the park or on the Georgian streets nearby, relaxed and fun and done before you know it, and then it's straight back inside to the party where we both belong.
Thinking about the Stephen's Green Club for your wedding?
If you want a Dublin city wedding with genuine elegance, real history and an intimate feel that bigger venues simply cannot replicate, the Stephen's Green Club is a serious contender. Saturday proved that without a shadow of a doubt.
