VIRGINIA PARK LODGE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER | DEIRDRE RUSK photography
A winter wedding full of warmth, laughter and the kind of magic that only Ireland can do
There are venues you photograph and then there are venues that get under your skin a little. Virginia Park Lodge is firmly in the second category and I've been a bit obsessed with it ever since.
I've had the joy of photographing weddings here a few times now, and every single time I turn in those gates I get a little flutter of excitement. That probably tells you everything you need to know.
So what actually makes Virginia Park Lodge so special?
Let's start with the setting. This is an 18th century hunting estate sitting on 100 acres of Cavan countryside, right on the banks of Lough Ramor. It was lovingly restored by renowned chef Richard Corrigan and that detail matters, because his influence runs through every part of the experience, from the interiors to the food to the way the whole place feels like someone genuinely cares about every single detail.
It's exclusive use, which means when you get married here the whole estate is yours. The historic house, the stunning gardens, the winding paths through exotic trees, the lake views, all of it, just for you and your people. No other weddings happening in a different wing. No strangers wandering through your photos. Just your day, in one of the most beautiful privately held estates in Ireland.
And it's only about an hour and a half from Dublin, so your guests aren't facing a trek, but the minute they arrive they'll feel like they've escaped somewhere truly special.
The spaces and there are some brilliant ones!
One of the things I love most about Virginia Park Lodge as a photographer is the variety. You're never stuck for a backdrop, whatever the weather, whatever the time of day.
The Lake View Pavilion is the showstopper. An exclusive space with views straight out over Lough Ramor that can hold up to 300 guests for dinner and dancing. It's dramatic, it's light filled, and it looks magical at every hour of the day.
For something more intimate, the 18th century Marchioness banqueting room holds up to 90 guests and has the kind of warmth and character that makes even the most camera shy couple look incredible in photos.
Ceremonies can be held in the house itself, the Lake View Pavilion, the walled garden, or the parterre gardens. If you're a couple who's been dreaming of outdoor vows with a lake behind you and 100 acres of stunning Irish countryside stretching out in every direction, well. You know where to go.
The food and it's genuinely worth talking about
This is a Richard Corrigan venue. The food is exceptional. Seasonal, locally sourced, beautifully presented and the kind of wedding meal your guests will still be talking about a year later. Everywhere you look there are reviews from couples saying the food alone was worth it, and I believe every single one of them.
There's also an in house florist who works with seasonal flowers, wild grasses and herbs from the gardens and surrounding meadows. If you want flowers that feel genuinely connected to the place you're getting married, this is a pretty special option to have.
For photos, rain or shine, this place delivers
I photographed the wedding you're looking at below in winter, and I want to show you these images specifically because I know winter couples sometimes worry. Don't. Virginia Park Lodge has enormous windows throughout that flood every space with natural light even on the dullest of days. The interiors alone, the cosy drawing rooms, the fireside nooks, the grand reception rooms with their high ceilings and period features, give you endless options when the weather won't play ball.
And when the sun does come out? The lake, the gardens, the winding paths through the estate, the views over Lough Ramor, it's genuinely one of the most photogenic venues I've ever worked in. I'm not just saying that.
What it's like to photograph a wedding here
I'm not a fly on the wall photographer. I'm there with you for the whole day, getting stuck in, having the craic with your guests, being fully present while always having one eye on the next real moment worth catching.
Virginia Park Lodge suits that approach perfectly. The estate is big enough that there's always something happening somewhere, always a quiet corner to disappear to for a few minutes with the two of you, always a new angle I haven't tried yet. We'll do your couple portraits and family photos, relaxed, fun, and over before you know it, and then it's straight back to the party where we both belong.
The staff here are also genuinely wonderful. A well run venue makes an enormous difference to how a wedding day flows, and this team, warm, professional, and completely unflappable, make my job so much easier than it might otherwise be.
Thinking about Virginia Park Lodge for your wedding?
If you want an exclusive, historic, genuinely stunning venue with food that will knock your guests sideways and a team that will make the whole thing feel effortless, go and view Virginia Park Lodge. You won't need much convincing once you're standing there looking out over Lough Ramor.
And if you're looking for a wedding photographer who'll be fully part of your day, not hovering at the edges but right in the middle of it with you, catching every real moment as it happens, I'd love to hear about your plans.
