SMOCK ALLEY THEATRE AND FALLON & BYRNE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER DUBLIN | DEIRDRE RUSK PHOTOGRAPHY
A Dublin city wedding that used the whole city as its backdrop and absolutely nailed it
There are Dublin weddings and then there are Dublin weddings. This was very much the second kind. A day that started in the Hard Rock Hotel, moved through one of the most stunning ceremony venues in the city, and ended with a party at one of Dublin's most beloved foodie institutions. If you're a couple who wants your wedding to feel like a proper love letter to Dublin, take notes.
I haven't stopped thinking about this one.
The day
From the minute I arrived at the Hard Rock Hotel that morning, the energy was electric. The bridal party were getting ready in a space full of personality and buzz, and yet somehow there was still that quiet, romantic anticipation that makes wedding mornings so special. Those are the moments I love most. The glance in the mirror. The squeeze of a hand. The deep breath before everything kicks off.
Then it was time for the ceremony, and honestly, Smock Alley Theatre delivered in every possible way.
The stained glass windows, the ornate plasterwork ceiling, the wooden floors and the sense of centuries of history in every wall. The ceremony was funny and romantic and genuinely moving all at once, and the room held all of it beautifully. There were tears, there was laughter, and there were so many moments I was glad I was exactly where I was.
Afterwards we took to the Dublin streets for photos and it was everything I love about shooting in this city. The cobblestones of Cow's Lane right outside the theatre. The character of Temple Bar a few minutes walk away. The light bouncing off old buildings and familiar streets that suddenly felt brand new. Dublin was putting on a show and we made the most of every second of it.
Then Fallon & Byrne. And what a party.
The joy in that room was infectious from the minute people walked in. Great food, brilliant company, and the kind of atmosphere that builds naturally when you put the right people together in the right place. These are the moments I do this job for.
Smock Alley Theatre — a ceremony venue unlike anything else in Ireland
If you're planning a Dublin city wedding and you haven't looked at Smock Alley Theatre yet, stop what you're doing.
Built in 1662 as Ireland's first Theatre Royal, Smock Alley is one of the most historically significant buildings in Dublin and one of the most visually spectacular ceremony venues in the country. In its long life it has been a theatre, a Catholic Church, and eventually a beautifully restored cultural hub sitting on the banks of the Liffey in the oldest district of the city. That history lives in every corner of the building and you feel it the minute you walk in.
Ceremonies take place in the Banquet Hall, which has an ornate plasterwork ceiling, stained glass windows from the building's time as a church, exposed stone walls, natural oak floors and the kind of acoustic quality for music that most venues can only dream of. The space seats up to 100 guests for a ceremony and is HSE licensed for civil ceremonies and civil partnerships. The cobblestones of Cow's Lane just outside make for some of the most characterful post-ceremony photos in Dublin.
It's a venue that suits couples who love the city, who love history, and who want their ceremony to feel genuinely unique rather than generic. If that sounds like you, go and take a look.
Fallon & Byrne — Dublin's favourite foodie venue and one brilliant place for a reception
Fallon & Byrne sits right in the heart of Dublin's Creative Quarter on Exchequer Street, a stone's throw from Grafton Street and surrounded by some of the most interesting streets the city has to offer. It's been one of Dublin's best loved food destinations for years and the Ballroom on the upper floors is one of the most stylish and characterful wedding reception venues in the city.
The Ballroom is a bright elegant space with large windows, beautiful chandeliers on dimmers and white walls that give you a blank canvas to make entirely your own. It seats up to 120 guests for dinner or up to 150 for a standing reception. The food, created by skilled chefs using fresh seasonal produce, is exceptional. Couples consistently say it's the best food their guests have ever had at a wedding and having seen the reaction in that room first hand I completely believe it.
There's a Wine Cellar below for drinks receptions and the whole building has that quality of a place that does what it does brilliantly without any fuss or pretension. It feels like a proper Dublin institution because it is one.
What it's like to shoot a Dublin city wedding
I'm a Dublin photographer to my bones and I will never get tired of shooting weddings in this city. There is something about the light, the streets, the buildings and the energy that just works for documentary photography in a way that nowhere else quite matches.
I'm not a fly on the wall photographer. I'm there with you for the whole day, in the middle of it all, having the craic with your guests and always ready when something real is about to happen. A Dublin city wedding suits that approach perfectly because the city itself keeps throwing things at you. A perfect corner of light on a cobbled lane. A moment between two people outside a pub. The energy of a room full of people who are genuinely having the time of their lives.
We'll do your couple portraits and family photos, relaxed and fun and done before you know it, and then we're straight back to the party where we both belong.
